SBS Insight 'The Cheating Game'

On Tuesday the 17th of October Simon Appeared on Insight. Here you can watch the video of Simons appearance and read his thoughts post show.

The SBS Insight edition titled `The Cheating Game', had the lofty aim of investigating topics as broad as drugs in sport, and the difference in classifying and setting sentences for those detected with `illicit' drugs in their system. Gene doping was also covered, but the science part of my brain waved bye bye some time ago so I just dozed through that.

I was obvious in my wheelchair and I did not feel like much of an athlete as I regaled my story of my basketball accident which resulted in my broken leg. Nevertheless, I attended the show with the possibly unrealistic aim of defending lifting in the forum. Let me thank nice and early Denise who organised all the travel and my carer Sarah, who wheeled me around.

My wheelchair-bound state meant that some people in the crowd would have kept their mouths shut, not wanting to appear to pick on the non full body abled. Plus the fear of having their arguments destroyed by me. Funnily enough, with my broken leg, I was the most drugged up I'd ever been. Panadol plus more. Anyway, I tried to make some salient points about all sports being affected by the scourge of drugs, but the constant tapping on my shoulder by the smug looking Doc Larkins interrupted my spiel a little. My enquiry as to the number of positives the AFL had last year was edited out, much to my displeasure but I wasn't really surprised. Given that cocaine is the drug of choice (on more than one occasion) of a few AFL pllayers, I just wanted to point out the double standards in representation of athletes. Not to mention TV stars, who the Doc could also be representing. As the toilet seats and the trace elements left on them at the Logies lay testament to, drugs are pretty popular everywhere!

My Age letter that I wrote many years ago illustrates my beliefs.

Simon.
